Backing Up Data (before a crash)
This is actually becoming the new pleg, companies are storing more and
more on bigger and bigger hard drives. But they're not backing it up, or
the backup is smaller than the amount of storage.
Time after time, we arrive at companies, in the middle of a drive or server
failure only to find, no backup, last backup happened 6 months ago, backups
have never been tested, restored.
The funny one is "Oh, we use a zip or CD burner.", yea right.
When you have time, or remember, besides when you've stored up 35 Gig's
of data, what's a 250 MB zip suppose to do?
The last server drive failure we serviced, gave us his zip disks, they
were empty. After rebuilding the server and pulling data from the old server,
yep a year old, we brought up a backup system. His answer, "don't
worry about it, we use zip." Can you believe this, he's lost most
of the year's accounting data, at 07/04, and has his staff re-enter it
now, yet when we brought up the fact he has no backup, he put it off.
By the way, this isn't a small business, it sits on half a city block.
It's become common for us to find a iso 9002 qualified company, that can't
restore their financial records should a hard drive fail.
There's no excuse for this type of behavior, it puts a companies ability
pay bills, collect payables, and pay it's staff at risk, when you can't
reproduce your own finance data.
Choices
You have many choices today. It's true, you can spend tens of thousands
of dollars on backup, but we have found that 90% of the time, we can get
very solid backups for a few thousand dollars.
It's true the best systems will give you an image copy across stripped
tapes at the maximum speed of you hard drives, open files and all.
But for most companies, we're able to get 2 complete backups each night.
One on tape, the other on a seperate hard drive. This gives us the ability
to restore using Windows explorer if the data is less than a week old,
if older, we go to tape.
